Translation

From Internationalization Wikia

This is a quick guide to translation.

  1. Set the language you want to translate in your preferences as your current language.
  2. Go to the languages page, choose your language and create the page with the Messages intro template – see MessagesDe for an example. Use that page for notes further on.
  3. Go to Special:Allmessages and translate messages that are not yet in your language.
    • All formulations should be done in a general, but Wikia-specific way (do not translate with focus on e.g. gaming wikis only).
    • Do not add links to project pages that most wikis won't ever have (e.g. a "Blocking policy" page – most wikis will be happy with only one "Project:Policies" page that keeps all needed policy stuff).
    • Do not insert any images into MediaWiki messages. Do not add complicated, highly adapted stuff you might know from Wikipedia. This can be done by local wiki admins. Keep it easy!
  4. Double-check the effect this has on the actual interface.
  5. Check the effect this has on the different skins. Some messages are not used by all skins (some are e.g. only used by the new Quartz skins). Keep this in mind, and change the skin in your preferences (at least Monobook and Quartz) to check if you got everything right.
  6. Go to the Updates page to request the corresponding code update for all wikis if you are done :-)
